Braga is the northern region of Portugal, which has access to the Atlantic Ocean. A historically significant region of the country, the first settlements in which were founded by the Celts. Later - in 14 AD - an ancient Roman city arose in the same place - Bracara, which later turned into Braga. 

 

The district itself is one of the most famous wine regions not only in the country, but also on the Iberian Peninsula. And the presence of the ocean coast and the mild maritime climate make it even more attractive to foreign tourists.

Braga is one of the most beautiful and inexpensive regions in Portugal. Although real estate prices here are higher than the national average, but lower than in the industrialized coastal regions of Porto, Lisbon, etc. The price level is also affected by the fact that the capital of the Braga district is the residence of the archbishop of Portugal and the religious center of the country.

Transport

Like almost all major cities in the country, Braga can be reached from Lisbon or Porto. The capital of the country is more convenient because there are many more flights from Europe. You will have to fly to Oporto. The journey from Porto to Braga by train takes only an hour and a half. Every day, 21 trains depart in this direction with short intervals. 

 

The bus from Porto to Braga takes only an hour. The ticket price is 6-9 euros - depending on the route and carrier.

 

From Lisbon, the journey by rail takes 4-4.5 hours. There is also an option to do this way by bus. The journey from Lisbon takes 4.5 hours. 

 

In the district itself, as in its capital, there is public transport, mainly represented by buses. Taxis are not used often, as they are quite expensive by local standards. Many locals prefer bicycles, which can be rented here.

Attractions

There are quite a lot of historical sights and museums in Braga, which are worth spending a few days to visit. The coastal part of the district is full of beaches, nightclubs and other entertainment infrastructure facilities. Since Braga is a wine-producing region, while traveling around the area, be sure to visit the wine-growing farms, where you will be treated to real port wine.
